My Biography

Thomas Loomis engages himself in various forms of music making. He has sixteen years of piano experience, thirteen years of vocal experience, and five years of experience in music production. Thomas utilizes his knowledge to make a myriad of connections across these disciplines for deepening student learning. Since receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education (Voice) from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam in 2020, he currently teaches at Van Antwerp Middle School in the Niskayuna CSD directing chorus and several sections of General Music.

Teaching Philosophy

One major role that educators play in a student’s development is to encourage creativity with an appropriate level of guidance and direction, as well as to provide them with opportunities that exemplify their progress. I believe that it is important to acknowledge that while I am here to share my knowledge of music as a teacher, the work that students and I do together is a collaborative experience. Whether it be lessons in Voice, Piano, Jazz, Music Theory or even Music Production, I work with students on building skills that create a deeper understanding in their discipline. Some foundational topics that will be discussed in lessons are ear training, analysis/application, practice routines, current events, and more. Even beyond musical topics, I strongly believe that it is my duty as an educator to facilitate my students’ learning in how to learn themselves, a skill I consider to be just as valuable as the material we study. This kind of mindset can allow for even more collaborative discussions in lessons.
